Andrew- I know you’re doing some tough stuff and are practicing living in the tension. Getting everyone to agree on everything isn’t going to happen, so it’s good to learn to live in the midst of the mess & try to love one another better.
It’s good to hear a Christian say they are there to “listen and learn.” That’s great and we’d all do well to work at offering the gift of listening. Also, hearing that you get the pain that Christians cause/d GLBT folks tells me that you are listening.
I did have a question with something you mentioned – can you talk about your choice to partner w/ Yarhouse and Bailey?
Bailey’s research misconduct charges and labeling (the hypothetical) selection for fetal sexual orientation “morally neutral” = Sketchy (to say the least).
Also sketchy- Yarhouse’s longitudinal study on ex-gays has been called “junk science.” From what I can find online, it was not peer-reviewed and was rejected by the APA. There is a list of problems with it. http://www.truthwinsout.org/blog/2009/08/3750/
My concerns w/ Bailey & Yarhouse:
1. bad track record w/ scientific studies
2. bad reputation among the GLBT community/blogosphere
3. continuing w/ the penchant Christians have for using junk science to bolster their position, which adds confusion, misinformation & resentment to the mix.
To be clear, I’m not calling your current research junk science. But that seems to be the reputation of their past work. If nothing else, it will be a hurdle to overcome.
How do you see it? Have I missed something? …this was not comfortable to ask, but I figure if I’M asking it, then others are as well. Thanks!
Great interview Andrew! I love Tony Campolo and his wife is a real gem. When you get the time, I’d also be interested in your response to TinaC.
